Chris' Ride

| 1967 | What you have before you is probably the most unique 1967 Buick GS 340 left in existence. This GS is originally 1 of 3692 produced in the middle of the ’67 production year. Only offered in Platinum Mist or Arctic White, this Platinum Mist specimen is equipped with approximately 38 options that were either originally ordered, or correct add-ons during restoration. Some of these are extremely rare and sought after like, the Cruise Control, Guidematic Headlamp Control, or the AM/FM Radio with Tone Reverberator, to name a few. In fact, this GS is so rare, most of the factory literature or brochures don’t even list the VIN prefix of 43417. This GS was purchased by me in September of 1987 with 71,000 original miles. Shortly after that, I began an extensive frame-off restoration that took 9 years and well over $35,000 to complete. Keep in mind, to keep the cost down, aside from the body work, paint, and machining, the majority of the restoration was performed by myself and friends in the business. The combination of the Platinum Mist color is well accented by the broad red stripes, red rallye type wheels, and red hood scoops. The body was meticulously restored to perfection. It would take someone very hard pressed to find any flaws in the PPG Deltron two-stage enamel paint. After shelving the original 340 cubic inch engine, Super Turbine 300 transmission, and 10 bolt rear, I decided that I wanted the best of both worlds. A classic 60’s musclecar on the outside, with plenty of power under the hood. That’s why I opted for the 455 instead of rebuilding the underpowered 340 cubic inch engine. Bored .038”, this engine now displaces 464 cubic inches with all high performance parts from T/A Performance, including their 5 main girdle, 1.65 roller rocker assembly, and Stage 1 valvetrain. Bill Miller aluminum pistons and factory steel rods with polished beams finish off the bottom end. True compression is in the neighborhood of 12:1. Factory heads were treated to a Stage 1 upgrade, and were ported, polished, and matched to an Offenhauser Dual-Quad manifold with (2) Edelbrock 750 cfm carbs. Camshaft is a T/A Performance Hydraulic, with over .600" lift. Although the engine compartment looks 60’s radical with the dual-quad intake and accessories, I’m sure this engine would prefer a single four barrel 850 Holley or equivalent. The small loss in horsepower is well worth the jaw-dropping reactions I get at local shows whenever I pop the hood. As for the rest of the drivetrain, how about a Switch-Pitch Super Turbine 400 transmission. How many people are using, or even know anything about this mid-60’s GM variable pitch transmission, whose convertor has two stall speeds controlled by a microswitch for high and low stall. This convertor stalls at 4000 rpm in high, and 1800 rpm in low. It looks like a corporate B-O-P Turbo 400, but “slightly” different inside. For the rear I chose the old reliable 12 bolt from a ’67 Chevelle. The housing anyway. Under the cover, and between the tires, the only thing factory stock is the brake parts. Strange spool, axles, and C-clip eliminators were the performance choice along with a Richmond 4.10 ring and pinion. Restoration of this GS was completed in early 1997, and looks just as incredible as it did when it was finished.COMPLETE OPTIONS LIST: Power Windows, Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Power Bucket Seat, Power Trunk Release, AM/FM Radio, Rear Seat Speaker, Tone Reverberator, Operating Console, Tachometer, Deluxe Steering Wheel, Tilt Steering Column, Air Conditioning, Speed Alert, Custom Seat Belts, Soft-Ray Tinted Glass, Rear Window Defroster, Bucket Seats, Auto Cruise Control, Remote Control Drivers Side Mirror, Day/Night Rearview Mirror, Vanity Mirror, Deluxe Carpet Savers, Trunk Mat, Tissue Dispenser, Litter Box, Compass, Guidematic Headlamp Control, Courtesy Light Package, Electric Clock and Trunk Light, Retractable Utility Light, Underhood Light, Door-Edge Guards, Engine Block Heater, Engine Lift-Stop, Dual Horns, Dual Exhaust, Wide-Oval Red Line Tires, Positive Traction Differential, Super Turbine Transmission, and Rallye Ride Package. |
